ADOBE PHOTOSHOP : Highlight buttons like a pro

This Photoshop tutorial covers the details of Highlight buttons like a pro

1. Create a blank menu and add buttons with subpicture layers.
Create a new menu from the 4x3 Blank Menu template found in the General set in the Library palette. Locate the button called Pastry Button (in the same set) and add it to the menu. Then, add the button called Turquoise Facets. Don’t worry about the placement of these buttons other than keeping them from overlapping. In this tutorial, you’ll use these buttons only to learn about button highlighting, not to create a real, working menu.
2. Look at the button layers. In the Layers palette, open the button layer sets. Notice that two layers are hidden in each set and have a special prefix, either (=1) or (=2). These are the subpicture layers —the layers that Adobe Encore DVD uses to highlight the button. The prefixes correspond to colors in the color set. (More about the color set in the following steps.) Each subpicture layer contains the text or images for a single color
Adobe Encore DVD combines these layers to create the subpicture overlay.
Notice that the Eye icon in the Layers palette is disabled for these layers. Instead of viewing or hiding them by using the Layers palette, you use the Show Subpicture Highlight icons at the bottom of the Menu Editor window. These icons display the highlighting for all buttons in a menu at the same time.
Try clicking these icons to see how these layers highlight the button. A DVD uses the same image to highlight each button state. For now, the selected and activated states are the same, whereas the subpicture is fully transparent in the normal state. As you’ll see in the following steps, you can control the color and visibility of the subpicture layers by changing the definitions in the color set.
