Exporting a .SWF from ImageReady for importing into Flash

This Photoshop tutorial covers the details of Exporting a .SWF from ImageReady for importing into Flash

1. In Photoshop, open the file 01_Photoshop.psd. This is a composite image comprised of several different layers. Now you’ll move this file into ImageReady and export it as a SWF.
2. Click the Edit in ImageReady button at the bottom of the Tools palette to switch to ImageReady.
3. Select File > Export > Macromedia Flash SWF. This opens the Macromedia Flash SWF Export dialog box.
4. Under Bitmap Options, select Lossless-32 as the format, which is essentially a PNG file format. This will allow you to individually optimize the image’s items in Flash. Next, check Preserve Appearance, which will maintain the exact look of the document. (Typically you check this option if you want to preserve the appearance of text.) Lastly, make sure white is selected as the SWF bgcolor, since that’s the background color of the PSD file. Click OK.
5. Save the file to your Desktop as 01_Photoshop.swf. You may see a dialog box warning you that text or shape layers were flattened because Preserver Appearance was checked. Just click OK if you see this. Now you’ll switch over to Flash and import this SWF file.
6. Open the file 05_PSD_to_IR_Start.fla. This is just a blank Flash document that’s been pre-created for you.
7. Choose File > Import > Import to Stage. Locate the SWF file on your Desktop and click Open (Windows) or Import (Mac).
8. Using the Arrow tool, drag the image around to see that most of the layers have been flattened into a single composite object.
9. Choose File > Revert to return the FLA to the way it was when you opened it. Now you’ll export the same file from ImageReady again, but this time you’ll change your export settings.
10. Switch back to ImageReady. The file 01_Photoshop. psd file should still be open. Choose File > Export > Macromedia Flash SWF.
11. This time, uncheck Preserve Appearance, and click OK. Save the SWF file as with the same name as before, overwriting the previous file.
12. Switch back to the 05_PSD_to_IR_Start.fla file in Flash. Choose File > Import > Import to Stage.
13. Locate the SWF file on your Desktop and click Open (Windows) or Import (Mac).
14. With the Arrow tool, click around the image and notice that each object can be individually selected.
So, depending on what you intend to do with your PSD file in Flash, you may either want to have everything imported as a composite image or with each layer as an individual object. One of the advantages of importing individual objects is that you can move each one to its own layer in Flash
15. To do so, press Ctrl-A (Windows) or Cmd-A (Mac) to select everything. Then choose Modify > Timeline > Distribute to Layers.
