Loading external JPEGs at runtime, for use in Flash 8

When creating Flash documents, keeping files as small as possible so that your swf movies can load quickly should be a constant concern. One method of keeping a Flash movieís file size lower is to not embed the images that you want your users to see or interact with, but instead to have the movie load the images from an external source when the user calls up an image.

1. Open the file 01_final.fla. This Flash file contains some cropped thumbnail versions of larger images. The intention here is for the larger version of†the image to appear on the right side of the stage when the user clicks on a thumbnail. Embedding these larger images into the SWF could†significantly increase the overall file size of the movie. First you’ll take a look at the completed version of this project.
2. Test this movie by pressing Ctrl-Enter (Windows) or Cmd-Return(Mac). Roll your mouse over the thumbnail images and notice how they pop into†full opacity. Then click the thumbnails to display their larger versions to the right.
3. Close the Test window.
In the following steps you’ll work with an incomplete version of this file and learn how to load an external movie containing the larger images into the†SWF. If you’re familiar with building HTML-based Web pages, this process is similar to linking to an image file from a Web page. The image itself is not†actually embedded on the page, but is instead referenced from it.†
Once you add another thumbnail to this SWF file, you’ll learn how to create the opacity rollover, and then how to add some simple ActionScript to†make its larger version appear
etc.....................................................
