This Photoshop tutorial covers the details of background Editing techniques

Borders with paint bucket and stroke
Step 1: Create a new layer and then select image / image size and resize to 700x525. Then select Image / Canvas Size and change this to a width of 800 and height 625
Step 2: Now set the foreground colour to white, and then use the paint bucket tool to fill the new layer with white. Drag this new layer to below the picture to ensure that it is still visible.
Step 3: Select the image layer and press the filter option at the bottom of the layers panel and select stroke. Change the settings to match below.
Step 4: Your image should look like below, save your image as boyborder.psd.

Borders with Masks
Step 1: Open winter.jpeg, double click on the winter layer to remove the layer lock. The new layer dialogue box will appear just press ok.
Step 2: Create a new layer, by pressing the button in the bottom of the layers panel. Select white as the foreground colour and then press Alt-backspace to fill the layer with white. Then drag the new layer down so it is below the image.
Step 3: Now select the rectangular marquee tool from the tools panel
Step 4: Draw a rectangle around the edge of the image about 150 pixels in, this will be the border area.
Step 5: Now with the photo layer selected click on the layer mask icon as in the previous tutorial. Click on the mask to make sure it is selected (a white border will be around the image).
Step 6: Now you can apply a filter to the mask and it will not effect the image, for example select filter / distort / ocean ripple and you image will look like below.
Step 7: If you then open the history panel and click the Add Layer Mask option this will remove the filter and enable you to apply another one. From the filters options select pixelate / crystallize and you will get different edges around you image.
Step 8: Save your image as borders.psd

Creating borders with effects and textures
Step 1: Open grate.jpg
Step 2: Select Image / Adjustment / Color Balance and then change the shadows, midtones and highlights to match
Step 3: Then open the surfer.jpg image from last weeks practical.
Step 4: Using the original image resize it so that it has a width of 600. Then use the selection tool and drag it into the grate image.
Step 5: Create a new layer and set the foreground colour to f4dc8c.
Step 6: Select the rectangle tool and draw a rectangle that would act as tape over the edges and use the paint bucket tool to fill the area.
Step 7: Now select / Deselect and then use the rubber tool to make the end slightly rough in appearance.
Step 8: Then select edit /free transform to rotate the tape so that it is at an angle to the corner.
Step 9: Select the brush tool and then change the brush type to charcoal as below
Step 10: Then using a single stroke paint over the tape ensuring that the foreground colour is set to black. Then select edit / fade brush tool and set the opacity to 15%. Repeat this process about three times.
Step 11: Then select filter Texture / Texturizer and simply press ok when the panel appears. Copy the tape layer 3 times, right click and duplicate layer and use the selection tool to move into position. You will have to select edit free transform to rotate into position.
Step 12: To give some texture to the picture, right clip on the layer containing the surfer and select blending options and change your settings to match
Note pressing ALT will enable you to make a single selection of just one of the sliders. Your final image should look like below, save your file as sufergrate.psd.
