PhotoShop Tutorials Scanning flat artwork workflow

This Photoshop tutorial covers the details of photoshop Scanning flat artwork workflow options.

This tutorial will provide photoshop Scanning flat artwork workflow options.
1. Open PhotoShop
2. File > Import > choose scanner
3. When you import the scanner for the first time make sure you change it from Full Auto Mode to that of Professional Mode.
4. When scanning flat artwork (photographs, drawings, fabrics, magazines, newspapers, books) make sure the document type is set to Reflective and Auto Exposure to Photo.
5. To view the artwork to be scanned click the Preview button.
6. Select the area you want to scan using the Marquee Tool in the Preview Window by holding the left button of the mouse and dragging the mouse over the desired area and a selection marquee will be created represented by a dash outline. The marquee can be resize by clicking onto the dashed outline and with the left button held the marquee can be adjusted. Do worry if the image is not straight as we can use the crop tool in PhotoShop to straighten it and remove excessive capture data.
7. After selecting the area you wish to scan return to the Epson Scan control window and set the Image Type to either 24-bit Colour or 8-bit Greyscale (Black & White images) and please ignore the rest of the options.
8. After selecting image type we need to consider the Resolution we wish to scan at. I
would recommend the following resolutions/dpi -dots per inch settings:
72 dpi: for Powerpoint/Keynote presentations, images to be displayed on the web, e-mail image, images to be used for video, motion graphics and animation.
200 dpi: for medium quality print output (LUSAD’s lab laser printers and home printers) and for image placement in text documents like Word and Pages.
360 dpi: for high quality inkjet printers (LUSAD’s wide format paper and textile printers) desktop publishing output via InDesign, Quark and PDF postscript for press and publication.
9. The final consideration we need to address in the destination of our scan is the Target Size we wish to output the scan. By default the scanner will scan the image at 100% but if you wish to increase the image for printing one can either enter your desired output in the W (width) and H (height) boxes in either pixels, millimeters, inches or you can enter a Scale percentage.
Useful print page sizes:
A4 = 297 x 210 mm
A3 = 420 x 297 mm
A2 = 594 x 420 mm
A1 = 840 x 594 mm
Useful PowerPoint and Keynote presentation sizes:
SVGA digital projector presentation 800 x 600 pixels
XGA digital projector presentation 1024 x 768 pixels
10. The final step before scanning is Descreening in the adjustment settings of the Epson Scan window. If you are scanning original artwork (drawings, photographs or flat materials) do not use Descreening but if you are scanning printed material always activate the Descreening option box.
Descreening makes printed material more photographic and smoother by blending the colour or black & white halftone used in the printing process. If you do not use Descreening the scanned image maybe excessively blotchy and pixilated.
Descreening has 3 Screen Ruling options, choose the one which is closest to your artwork.
11. Please ignore the rest of the adjustment options in the Epson Scan window as we will do all image adjustments in PhotoShop.
12. Now we are ready to Scan our artwork
13. When the scanner is scanning your artwork it make take some time especially if one is scanning at a high resolution and target size. Please leave the computer alone when scanning and not feel tempted to use another application as this may result in the application freezing or the computer crashing.
14. After the scanned image appears in the work area in PhotoShop save the file immediately before working on it. For high quality scans (360 dpi) may I suggest saving them as either PhotoShop or uncompressed TIFF files, for medium quality scans (200 dpi) JPeg will do but make sure the image quality is set to 12 or maximum and low quality scans for screen output (72 dpi) Jpeg with a high quality setting of 8 will give acceptable results.
